Theatre Program at Ivanhoe Grammar School
Ivanhoe Grammar School’s Theatre Program offers students a rich and sustained engagement with live performance, providing opportunities to collaborate, create, and present meaningful theatrical work across the school year. Through a carefully structured program of productions, performance events, and learning experiences, students from Year 7 to Year 12 develop artistic skill, confidence, and a deep understanding of how theatre is made.
The program values ensemble, discipline, and creative ambition, fostering a culture in which students work together to create theatre that is thoughtful, purposeful, and engaging for an audience.
Performance Opportunities
Across our campuses students have the opportunity to participate in a range of productions across the year, each offering distinct creative experiences and pathways for involvement both on stage and as part of the crew. The annual Theatre season includes both straight plays and musical theatre productions, offering both intimate performance experiences and major large-ensemble experiences.
Across all productions, students are involved in acting, technical theatre, production support, and front of house roles, developing an understanding of theatre as a collaborative art form in which every contribution matters.
Cast and Crew Pathways
Theatre at Ivanhoe places equal value on cast and crew, recognising that successful theatre depends on expertise and commitment across performance, technical, and production roles. Students can be involved in areas including acting, sound, lighting, backstage, costumes, hair and make-up, stage management support, and front of house operations.
Through participation, students build practical theatre skills alongside essential transferable skills such as communication, responsibility, problem solving, and teamwork.
Facilities and Performance Spaces
Across both campuses, the Theatre Program is supported by dedicated rehearsal and performance facilities and industry standard sound, lighting, and staging equipment. Students gain hands on experience with the technical theatre provisions used in professional contexts, building valuable vocational skills and contributing to productions of outstanding technical quality.
Broader Theatre Experiences
In addition to productions, the Theatre Program includes performance events and experiences that support students’ artistic development, such as VCE Showcases, production viewing nights, and community events. These experiences give students opportunities to reflect on theatre practice, share work, and engage with the wider Theatre community at Ivanhoe Grammar School.
A Culture of Collaboration
At its core, the Theatre Program is about collaboration and care — for the work, for the audience, and for one another. Students are encouraged to take creative risks, work with focus and generosity, and contribute to the creation of theatre that is both personally meaningful and collectively significant.
Through sustained participation across year levels, the Theatre Program nurtures confident performers, capable theatre makers, and engaged audiences, making it a vital part of the cultural life of Ivanhoe Grammar School.
