Winners of the Illuminate Challenge

Last week, Year 10 Commerce students took part in the Illuminate Challenge at Deakin University and we are very proud to have brought home two wins for the day, with one Ivanhoe Grammar School team taking out the top prize!

The Illuminate Challenge is open to all Year 9 and 10 Commerce students in Australian schools. Students work in a team to generate a great business idea, develop a business and marketing plan and a two year financial forecast.

The challenge is designed to hone both business and life skills, the Illuminate team say. “The skills are not just ones useful for running a business, as students learn about stress and team management, independent learning, budgeting, planning, creative thinking and speaking.”

The overall winner of the Illuminate Challenge was Ivanhoe Grammar School’s ‘Carbon Miles’. An accreditation service for food-producing businesses, Carbon Miles measures their carbon footprint. The team developed an app that consumers can use to scan or type in a product and see how far it has travelled and the carbon footprint of that product. It helps consumers make more informed choices about what they purchase.

Another Ivanhoe Grammar School team – eBins – won the Pressure Cooker Challenge. Teams were given one hour to come up with a business-wide response to a hacking incident.

Well done to all the students involved on your well-earned wins! It’s great to see sustainability as a focus for our future business leaders.
