Will Kostakis entertains our Year 9’s

Will Kostakis, author of The First Third, was only 19 when his first novel for young adults, Loathing Lola, was released. It went on to be shortlisted for the Sakura Medal in Japan and made the official selection for the Australian Government’s 2010 Get Reading! program.

Will enlightened the Year 9 students at The Ridgeway Campus on Friday 21 August with his tales of becoming an author. He delivered an entertaining talk about how perseverance can help you succeed, even if at times it is a struggle. He spoke about using aspects of his life and adding ‘what if’ elements to develop a story idea.

He captured the Year 9’s attention as they were engaged with his talk and laughing along at his comedic style, with one student commenting that, “he was entertaining as he spoke about his personal experience as a high school student and his family.”

Defying the odds, one lucky student, Kelati, won a copy of Will’s book in a knock out game of heads or tails. In addition to his talk, Will conducted a lunchtime workshop with a group of students from Years 7 to 10 and a class workshop with 9F. The workshops discussed story ideas, allowing students to interact and build on concepts discussed.
