VCE Theatre Studies – Blood Brothers

The VCE Theatre Studies class is performing Blood Brothers by Willy Russell at the Schuster Drama Studio, ArtsEdge at Locksley. Set in 1960s Liverpool, Blood Brothers tells the gripping story of twin brothers separated at birth and raised in contrasting worlds—only to be drawn together by fate, with devastating consequences.

This inventive production, designed and directed by the VCE Theatre Studies cohort, highlights the epic theatricality of Russell’s script while exploring powerful themes of fate, class, identity, and self-determination. Full of secrets, forbidden love, and emotional twists, this bold student-led performance brings the story to life with creativity and insight. Students are thrilled to be presenting this sold-out production from Tuesday 10 June – Saturday 14 June.

Student reflections

Lucas Year 12
The Ivanhoe Grammar School Play is one of the most rewarding projects the school offers. As a current Year 12 Theatre Studies student, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with younger students to create a high-quality piece of work. Blood Brothers, my last performing arts endeavour with the school, has defied expectations.
The amazing Ms Atkin consistently helps every student reach their full theatrical potential. Having her support makes attending weekly rehearsals, designing soundscapes, and learning the elusive Scouse accent possible. Blood Brothers has been the highlight of my Year 12 experience, and I would like to thank all the staff and students who made my performing arts journey at Ivanhoe so special.

Charlotte Year 10
Blood Brothers has been one of my absolute favourite theatre involvements during my time at Ivanhoe. It has been an opportunity to further my acting skills and a wonderful experience to share with many of my friends across multiple year levels. I have honestly loved every moment of the process, and I can say that coming to the Schuster for rehearsals is always something I look forward to and it never fails to put a smile on my face. I will be extremely sad after closing night, but I will be forever thankful for the memories it has given me.

Tashi – Year 11
Being a part of Blood Brothers has been one of the most exciting, thrilling, challenging, and rewarding experiences of my life. As a member of the 3/4 VCE Theatre Studies class, I am significantly invested in this play and have quite literally gone through blood, sweat, and tears to make it happen. I’ve loved getting to work with my peers in this class, as well as getting to know so many amazing souls from every year level in this school. This production has taught me a lot about myself and the community I’m so lucky to be a part of in Locksley, and for that, I’m truly grateful.
