Science Week at Ivanhoe Grammar School

Science Week was officially launched at the School on Friday 21 August with a morning tea for staff and the Science Faculty hosted five days of fun activities, running mainly during lunchtime. Making and icing cookies in the shape of Science equipment was well attended by the Year 7’s. Professor Bunsen delivered a wonderful show of mini science experiments to the Year 8’s. The Professor is so passionate about Science and students loved all the potions, lights and explosions. There were lots of oooh’s and aaaah’s as he presented demonstrations related to this year’s theme.

Making use of our Physics dark rooms, students were given the opportunity to make glow in the dark slime, sun prints with photosensitive paper and use ‘Glitterbug’ to check how well they wash their hands. Glitterbug glows under UV light and proved to be very popular with students and staff.

It was great to see Senior students helping out the Middle Years’ students throughout the week which included visual perception activities to make cardboard ‘Ames’ rooms, pin hole cameras, kaleidoscopes and 3D glasses. Also on display were optical illusions, Bioluminescence and Chemiluminescence information and holograms to fit on their iPad.

A big thank you to all the Science staff, Food Technology staff and of course to the students who came along and enjoyed something special. We look forward to next year’s Science Week here at Ivanhoe Grammar School.
