Ivanhoe Netballers Play Brunei National Netball Team in International Match

Ivanhoe’s netballers had the remarkable opportunity to compete against the Brunei National Team, the Royal Bees, in an international match at La Trobe Sports Centre on Wednesday 19 November. The Royal Bees are currently in Melbourne for the Exposure Games as they prepare for the 33rd SEA Games and the fixture provided valuable high-level competition for both sides.

According to Royal Bees Head Coach, Thilaka Jinadasa, the match delivered precisely the intensity her team was seeking. With a final score of 62–57, the game was tightly contested throughout. After Ivanhoe took an early lead in the first quarter, the Royal Bees surged back in the second, leaving just a single point between the teams at halftime.

For experienced Brunei player Nur Hafizah Abdul Sidek, the team’s recent emphasis on fitness proved crucial. ‘Our coaches are all about fitness. It’s hard work, but it shows on the court that we can last 15 × 4.’

The third quarter saw the Royal Bees gain momentum with sharp defensive pressure and clinical shooting, extending their lead to 11 by the final break. Ivanhoe responded brilliantly in the last term, reducing the margin to five before the visitors steadied to claim the win.

Ivanhoe Grammar School’s Director of Sport, Ms Kelly Ryan, praised the spirit and professionalism displayed by both teams and highlighted the immense value of such a contest for the School’s athletes. ‘This was a unique experience to play against the Brunei National Netball Team, and one our girls will remember for a long time.’

As Ivanhoe’s team captain, Maddie shared, the match was a standout moment in her Ivanhoe sporting journey. ‘Playing in an international netball match for Ivanhoe was unforgettable. The atmosphere was amazing, especially with all the girls turning up to play and support each other. It was a great chance to build our skills and meet new players. Representing the School at this level was such a privilege, we hope there are more opportunities like this in the future.’
