Gifted Education Networking Event
Recently the VIC/TAS Gifted Education Networking Event was hosted at Ivanhoe Grammar School’s Plenty Campus, the event brought together almost 100 professionals from more than 60 organisations to discuss theories and learn from key stakeholders within rich discussions.
Dr Jane Tiller opened the event sharing her groundbreaking work on genetic discrimination — with the bill passing in the House of Representatives in the days following the event — she then reflected on her own experiences as a gifted student and the practical implications for teachers.
Participants then immersed themselves in a Year 5 Science lesson on microplastics with Professor John Munro. He expertly demonstrated gifted education theory in action and how teachers can identify and respond to giftedness in all its forms.
Three rotating workshop sessions sparked rich discussion across more than 20 interests and high needs topics, including AI and gifted learners, mathematics, critical and creative thinking, design thinking with LEGO, global trends, self-efficacy and mentoring.
It was an invaluable opportunity to hear from key stakeholders in gifted education including Victorian Association for Gifted and Talented Children, Australian Association for the Education of the Gifted and Talented LTD- AAEGT, Tasmanian Association for the Gifted Inc, Independent Schools Victoria, Department of Education VHAP, Centre for Higher Education Studies, Catholic Education Tasmania, Australian Catholic University, Department for Education, Children and Young People, The Academy of Accredited SEAL Schools, Melbourne and Beyond Gifted Network, Christian Schools’ Gifted and Talented Network, Association for Gifted and Talented Education Victoria, and Home Education Network.
Thank you to Ivanhoe’s Head of Academic Extension Amy Horneman and Academic Extension Coordinator Rebecca Waese for organising such a wonderful and inspiring event.
