Future Problem Solving teams qualify for the International Conference in Indiana, USA!

The Future Problem Solving teams had an absolutely fantastic weekend in Sydney at the Future Problem Solving Program Australia National Finals on October 19-21.

Students were energised, engaged, respectful and collaborative, and they did our school and our state of Victoria very proud. Each of our 11 students came away with a medal and both of our teams; Year 9 and Year 10, have qualified for the International Conference in Indiana, USA in June next year. Our Year 10 Global Issues team won first place, consisting of students Hugo, Michael, Jai and James. Our Year 9 team from University Campus won third place overall. Our Magic Members all won medals as well, with Maddie placing first and Tilda placing third. An incredible result for Ivanhoe Grammar School!

The trip to Sydney for the Future Problem Solving National Finals was an incredible experience filled with learning, creativity and fun! It was amazing to practice how to think, not what to think and to meet so many passionate students from all across Australia. One of the biggest highlights was the booklet writing session, where we worked in teams of four to explore the topic of nanotechnology in paramedicine. Together, we identified problems, uncovered the underlying issue, generated creative solutions, set criteria and developed an action plan, with some of our team members collaborating in groups with people we’d never met before! It was super fun to be challenged creatively and intellectually in new directions. We also loved performing our action plan, turning our ideas into a dramatic presentation that developed our communication and teamwork skills. Outside of competition time, we enjoyed exploring Sydney’s beaches, eating delicious food, catching the ferry and even riding the fully autonomous metro. Which was funny because last year’s topic was autonomous transport! It was an unforgettable, inspiring trip.

Michael, Year 10

On Sunday October 19 a group of students participated in the Middle Years British Parliamentary Debating at Caulfield Grammar School.

British Parliamentary debating was an exhilarating experience. With three debates throughout the day, everyone experienced the thrill of quick improvisation of POIs and the informative exhibition debate. Overall, the experience at Caulfield Grammar School, although slightly exhausting, was an extremely good and fun use of my time and I’m glad I got to go.

Alex, Year 7

Congratulations to all students on their hard work and outstanding achievements!
