Student reflections

‘The 2026 Future Problem Solving International Conference was an unforgettable journey. FPS brought 2,000 champion solvers to Indiana University Bloomington for the highest level of competition. Our team competed in the Global Issues Middle Years division on ‘Forestry’. Transitioning from cold winter air to Indiana’s blazing summer heat shifted our perspective as much as the new environment did. We explored Bloomington, trying local food – with bagels as the fan favourite – wandered the vast university grounds, and most importantly felt the thrill of competing globally. My key takeaway, aside from learning about nature’s hidden networks like the mycelium connecting every tree underground, was the connections we built. I spoke with peers who’ve done FPS since 3rd grade, exchanged cultural insights, and gained life skills I’ll cherish forever. Beyond the competition, the friendships formed during this trip made it truly special, and it will undoubtedly remain a highlight of my entire year.’ – Alexis, Year 10, Plenty Campus.

‘Future Problem Solving (FPS) is a competition where students need to apply their critical, creative and worldwide knowledge to a futuristic scenario, through a 6 step process. As a team, we had to work together to brainstorm problems with the scenario, work together on the best solution, and write in detail about our solution. Then we had to do a short 5 minute presentation on our solution in a comedic and engaging way. I had the opportunity to attend the International Conference, and compete against other people around the world. My highlight of the trip was making friends around the world (France, USA) and I am still quite close with them. It was also cool to explore the United States, and see how different their buildings and food is to ours in Australia. This FPSIC was beneficial for me because it helped advanced my FPS thinking skills, especially in the creative section.’- Arjunaa, Year 9, University Campus.
