Find Your Treasure

Every year, across Australia, Book Week is celebrated in schools, libraries and bookstores, celebrating the joy of reading books. This year participants were encouraged to ‘Find Your Treasure’ and the week officially ran from Saturday 18 – Friday 24 August.

First established in 1945, the Children’s Book Council of Australia has been engaging the community with literature for young Australians and presents annual awards for Australian children’s literature.

At Ivanhoe Grammar School it’s a very busy time for our Senior and Junior libraries with performances bringing favourite books to life, special activities held daily, visiting storytellers, competitions and of course the very popular book-character parades.

Buckley House held a Book Week performance on shortlisted picture book, A Walk in the Bush. Tony Appleby is a seasoned performer who had children on stage mimicking bird calls and much hilarity ensued. The mini oval at Buckley House was completely transformed for the parade with brightly coloured pirates, mermaids and much-loved book characters alongside a percussion and concert band. It was wonderful to see so many parents in the audience and everyone commented on how much fun the morning was.

Both the senior and junior libraries at Plenty Campus came alive with special activities held throughout the week. Plenty Campus loves a dress-up and staff and students enthusiastically got into the spirit with some amazing costumes on display at the parade and a moving assembly.

The value of reading to our children is indisputable with vast research and studies in support. Reading aloud to our children or students helps them in so many ways and instils a life-long love of reading. As Roald Dahl said, “If you are going to get anywhere in life, you have to read a lot of books.”
