Chinese Debating Championships

On Saturday 8 August a group of Year 11 Chinese students participated in the Victorian Schools Chinese Debating Championship held at Monash University, Caulfield Campus. The Ivanhoe team won both debates very convincingly against quality teams from Yarra Valley Grammar School (result 6 :3) and Brighton Grammar School (7:2) respectively.

The judges spoke very highly of the Ivanhoe team’s performance, commenting on their professional, ‘university standard’ level debating skills and the consistent and logical development of their respective arguments. The students were further complimented on their overall language proficiency and coherency, team cooperation and their ability to hold their stand throughout both debates.

It was really pleasing to see many other Ivanhoe students and parents in attendance for moral support and alumni in attendance cheering the debaters on.

In true Ivanhoe style, at the conclusion of proceedings all students sang the School song accompanied by Lilac on the baby grand piano! The debaters have now progressed to the final stages of this championship to be held this Saturday, August 27 at the same venue.

Ms HongYan LI and the students have worked tirelessly in the preparation for this event with their efforts rewarded on Saturday. They are looking forward to continued success this weekend!
