Digital Changemakers
Term Three Unit: Digital Changemakers (Years 5 and 6)
In Term 3, Years 5 and 6 students participated in the Digital Changemakers unit, which focused on understanding artificial intelligence and its role in our lives. Students learnt about the basics of AI, where it appears in everyday life, and discussed its benefits and drawbacks. Activities included analysing real versus AI-generated content and investigating how AI learns from data.
Ethics and Responsibility
A key part of the unit was exploring ethical considerations. Students discussed issues such as privacy, bias, and responsible use of technology. They debated real-world dilemmas involving AI and learnt strategies for protecting personal information and showing integrity online. Through group discussions and critical thinking routines, students developed a deeper understanding of fairness and caution when using digital tools.
‘It’s exciting to see our Years 5 and 6 students learning about the safe and ethical use of AI through a dedicated unit. Using Canva Magic, they’re able to explore AI in a secure and guided environment. Following a successful pilot at Buckley House this year, we’re looking forward to this becoming a cornerstone cross-campus unit from 2026 onwards, equipping students with the awareness and skills they’ll need for responsible AI engagement in high school,’ said Head of Pedagogy – Science and Technology, Rachelle Crameri.
App Design and Prototyping
Students moved into app design by identifying problems, planning solutions, and creating digital prototypes using Canva. They brainstormed ideas, mapped out their app designs with flowcharts and considered user interface and user experience principles. The process encouraged creativity, collaboration, and practical problem-solving.
Sharing and Celebrating Learning
The unit finished with an expo, where students showcased their app designs to the parent community. Parents were invited to view the digital prototypes, ask questions and celebrate the students’ achievements. This event gave students a real audience for their work and highlighted the value of ethical, innovative digital solutions.
‘I loved seeing the students collaborate within and across classrooms, and watching the unit evolve as they discovered more about the exciting world of AI. The final expo was the perfect way to cap off our learning and truly celebrate the achievements of our young students,’ said Primary Classroom Teacher / Professional Learning Community Leader, Clare Atherton.
