Spotlight on AFL players

Ivanhoe Grammar School can boast a most unique record when it comes to its former students making their mark in senior football. There have been under 100 players who have kicked a goal with their first kick in the history of the VFL/AFL. The three most recent additions to AFL ranks from the school have all scored a goal with their first kick.

Dylan Buckley, Class of 2011 (Carlton) debuted in Round 3, 2013 as did Sam Grimley, Class of 2009 (Hawthorn) in Round 9 in the same year while 2013 graduate Ben Lennon, made his first appearance for the Tigers on Saturday 18 May and, like Sam and Dylan, didn't let first match nerves get the better of him and made no mistake with that all important first kick.

Dylan, who played AGSV representative football whilst at School, graduated in 2011 and was recruited to Carlton under the father/son rule. His father is triple premiership player Jim Buckley. Sam played basketball as well as football whilst attending School and was Boys’ Sport Captain in his final year, graduating in 2009. Ben was the Firsts’ Football Co-Captain during his time at Ivanhoe and also played for the Northern Knights and he started kicking around a ball when he was just seven years old. The spot light now turns to our future AFL recruits to see if history can repeat itself for a fourth time.

The sporting program at Ivanhoe encourages active participation, fitness and fun over a comprehensive range of summer and winter sports. Students are active and enjoy a range of sports in a friendly environment. All students take part in the School sporting program and train in their chosen sport during the week and participate in the AGSV/ APS competition on Saturday mornings.
