Snowsports Success

Ivanhoe Grammar School recently had four students qualify during the Victorian Interschools Snowsports competition, allowing them to compete in the Australian Interschools Championships held at Perisher, NSW from Wednesday 10 to Sunday 14 September.

The Subaru Australian Interschools Snowsports Championships brings together the best young snow sports athletes in the country. Competitors are given the opportunity to represent their school and State and to compete for an Australian title.

To gain entry, students must be a member of a top six placed team, or finish in the top ten as an individual to qualify from their State Championships. With mere fractions of a second separating the competitors, this is no easy task in itself.

Despite some difficult weather which at times caused some race delays during the week, Ivanhoe had some notable achievements. Year 4 student Eliza placed 6th in her Cross Country Classic race and Alex, another Year 4 student gained 4th and 6th place in the Snowboard and Snowboard Cross races.

In the senior division, Year 11 student Jake Cunningham was well prepared for his race after an 8th place in the Victorian Interschool for Snowboard Giant Slalom (GS) but suffered a fall during his first run and finished up a creditable 20th on a difficult course.

Adam Provaznik, of Year 8 went into his Alpine GS race after a tied 3rd place in the Victorian races and put in a stunning performance to win a Silver Medal, just shy of the Gold medal by a mere 1.6 seconds over two runs, and just clear of Bronze by 0.6 seconds. Adam’s commitment and passion for ski racing has justifiably produced a great result for him in his first season in Australian conditions.

Congratulations to all the Ivanhoe competitors throughout the Snowsports season!
