Marlo Named in U16 All-Australian Team

Congratulations to Year 10 student Marlo who has been named as part of the 2023 AFL National Development Championships U16 Girls All-Australian Team. This is fantastic news for Marlo and we are all very proud of this significant achievement and her being recognised among some of the best football players for her age nationally. Recently Marlo took time out to answer some questions we had about her journey with football and her hopes for the future.

How long have you been playing football?

I have been playing football for nine years.

What position do you play in?

I mostly played in the Midfield until Metro when I played half-forward and on the wing.

What do you love about the game?

I love the connections football brings. I have made so many friends through footy and love the team aspect of the game.

How do you feel about making the 2023 AFL National Development Championships U16 girls All-Australian Team?

I feel really honoured to be recognised and be put on this team with some of the best 16-year-old girls around Australia. I am also excited as to what the future of my football journey may have in store for me.

How do you manage your academic work at school with sport?

Managing all schoolwork along with my football and basketball commitments at the start of the year was difficult I found that I couldn’t always do the study I wanted to do. So, after term 1 I decided to quit basketball and focus on Footy and school which has been a great decision so far.

What words of encouragement do you have for girls starting out in footy?

I would say to just enjoy yourself, the team environment and playing with friends.

Who do you look up to and why?

I look up to Rylie Wilcox. Rylie recently got drafted by the Bulldogs in the AFLW and she also played for the Northern Knights before being drafted, (like I am doing currently). I became close with her this year as she has been coming down to Northern Knights training and helping out. She inspires me with how she got to the AFLW level and gives really relevant and helpful advice which helps me keep improving my game.

Who do you barrack for?

I go for Carlton.

How far would you like to take the sport?

It would definitely be a dream to go all the way with my footy and get drafted into the AFLW.
