Fraser Centre: Shaping Confident Futures

As construction of the Fraser Centre progresses at Ridgeway Campus, it signals much more than the arrival of a new building. It represents a deliberate step forward in how Ivanhoe Grammar School supports young people through the decisive final phase of their schooling.

Created for our Senior Years students, the Centre will give our Year 10 to 12 students a distinctive home: one designed around the spaces they need to learn, create and prepare for what comes next.
‘The Fraser Centre will significantly enhance teaching and learning across the Senior Years,’ says Amber Sowden. ‘The building has specialist spaces, from the university-style lecture theatre and contemporary classrooms to the bespoke design labs and purpose-built study pods. They have been designed to be flexible and multi-modal, allowing students to explore their creative passions, deepen their academic learning and prepare for the future. It reflects our commitment to creating learning environments that can evolve as education continues to change.’

For Senior Years students, the Fraser Centre will place academic learning, pastoral support, House identity and belonging, and student future planning in one connected environment. University-style study zones, breakout spaces and a rooftop café will give them opportunities to make responsible choices about where and how they work, how they connect with peers, and how they balance effort, wellbeing and community.

This is the value of Principal Gerard Foley’s description of the Fraser Centre as ‘a bridge between school and university’. It will introduce students to the kind of environment they are likely to encounter after graduation, while still surrounding them with the guidance, relationships and pastoral care that remain central to an Ivanhoe education.

At the same time, the Fraser Centre will remain firmly embedded in the life and history of the School. Named after former Principal Rod Fraser AM, it honours a leader whose influence helped shape Ivanhoe Grammar School’s outward-looking character, commitment to co-education and belief in educating young people for meaningful lives of contribution.

Its design also tells a story. Shaped by Wood Marsh and delivered by Building Engineering, the building’s sweeping brick form will create a striking new presence beside the South Ground. The façade, crafted from more than 70,000 Australian-made bricks across 16 custom profiles, gives physical expression to ideas of learning, memory and continuity.

Further layers of connection can be found in the people behind the project. Old Ivanhoe Grammarian Randal Marsh (’77) has helped guide the architectural vision, while the generosity of Peter Kempen AM, George Andrianopoulos (’77) and Chris Andrianopoulos (’81) will be reflected in spaces where future students will gather, perform, learn and look ahead.

When complete, the Fraser Centre will help students see their final years not simply as a pathway to exams, but as preparation for independence, agency and possibility. It will be a place where young people are invited to think beyond what they are learning today and toward the kind of lives they are preparing to lead tomorrow.
