Buckley House Sports News

Cross Country

Term 2 was Cross Country season at Buckley House and we ended on a high, with four state finalists and one national representative!

The first half of the term involved all students training and developing their cardiovascular fitness for the mid-term House Cross Country championships. All students trained hard and should be proud of their efforts both during our month-long training and at the event down at Chelsworth Park. Congratulations to Thoresby and Athelstane who (unbelievably after 8 events and 200 children running) tied the event.

After the House event, a School team was chosen and those students continued competing at various regional levels. After qualifying across four different sections (House, District, Division and Region), Buckley House had four children who qualified for the State Cross Country Finals! This was the largest contingent of State qualifiers that we have had in 15 years.

Cleo Bruscino-Raiola, Mitch Siakou, Nelly Tragardh and Tyson Nagel all competed at the State Championships at Bundoora Park on Thursday 20th July. In fields 100-stong with the best endurance athletics in the state involved, all the races were of an extremely high standard. Competition was tough with the usual cross country conditions on show at Bundoora Park with rain, wind and freezing conditions. All our students competed valiantly with Cleo, Mitch and Nelly all coming in around half way (40th – 60th) in their races. Tyson Nagel (Year 5) ran an amazing race in the Under 11 Boys 3000m finishing in 6th place and earning a call up for the Victorian State Team to compete in the National Championships in Hobart next month.

Ivanhoe District Winter Finals

Four Buckley House teams qualified for the Ivanhoe District Winter Finals on Friday 21st July. The Girls Teeball and Year 5 Netball teams along with the Boys Teeball and Football teams qualified for the morning semi Finals by coming Top 4 during the Term 2 season.

In the morning Semi Finals all 4 teams were victorious to send them into the afternoons Grand Finals.

The Grand Finals were close and tense matches, all Buckley House teams did the school proud with their fight, endeavor and sportsmanship. Congratulations to Mr. Coleman and our Girls Teeball team who were the only team to win the Grand Final and move on to the Division finals in the up coming weeks.
