A Great Start to AGSV/APS Girls Winter Sport

What a fantastic start to the AGSV/APS Girls Winter Sport Competition!

1sts Netball: Round 1. Ivanhoe vs Mentone
Win 79-38

With a short lead-in to the season, our dedicated firsts girls came in for a couple of extra training sessions over the school holidays. They were excited and a bit nervous to get underway given there wasn’t any competition last year (as was the coach in her first game for Ivanhoe!).

Mentone stuck with us for the first half, and we saw some great intensity from our defenders, the Burge sisters, to keep them in check. As the game went on, our midcourt really started flying the ball down the court with Ruby and Freya clocking up some decent kms in their Netburners!  Our Captain Hayley was a great target for us in the shooting circle and our GA’s did a nice job in finding her under the post.

Overall, it was fantastic to see them out there playing their first game together and a bonus to get a good win under our belt that we will use as the foundation to build our season on.

1sts Basketball: Round 1. PEGS vs Ivanhoe
Win 55-33

The lead-in to the season this year was a short one as the summer season was extended into March, due to COVID-19.  However, the Basketball girls worked hard during the holiday break to be ready for round 1. It was an even scoring game until the 2nd half when the girls came out hard and sealed off a 20-point win.

Liv Perillo’s leadership made her a threat to the other team in offence and defence allowing her teammates Jess Del Brocco, Bella Krienke and Izzy Wightman to be a scoring force for us. Overall, a very exciting start to a promising season!

1sts Soccer: Round 1. Ivanhoe vs Haileybury
Win 2-0

The Firsts Girls’ Soccer team defeated Haileybury 2-0 with a fantastic team effort. Ivanhoe was able to break the 0-0 score line 15 minutes into the second half thanks to an incredible solo goal by Helena Chetcuti.  Mae O’Brien added a second shortly after, the youngest player on the team and quite possibly on the field was full of energy and dominated throughout the game.

The girls were fantastic from the outset and the positive energy radiated across the pitch. Ivanhoe are looking forward to their next challenge this weekend away at PEGS.

1sts Football: Round 1. Carey vs Ivanhoe
Win Ivanhoe Grammar School 4.1.25 Carey 2.6 18

Two girls playing their first game of football, 10 girls debuting in the firsts and limited preparation set up for a match full of unknowns! Those unknowns quickly became a display of hard contested footy from the first bounce to the last play of the day. The girls played a great team game, fought hard to be first at the ball and applied tackle intensity second to none! It was obvious that the girls had missed playing contact sport. Several players clashed with injury however soldiered on to play out the game.

Carey was physical and never wanted to back down and our team responded with calm heads and stuck to our process. They have now set a benchmark for the rest of season and are looking forward to next week against a tough opposition in PEGS.
