A Fabulous Weekend of Summer Sport

It was a big weekend in sport with many of our teams in the finals of the AGSV Summer Sports Championships and some exciting Summer premiership wins and APS finishes. A big congratulations to everyone who played with pride, representing Ivanhoe Grammar School.

Well done to the Girls’ Volleyball team, who played fantastically and only lost one game for the entire season, finishing as runners up for the Summer Season. The girls have trained and worked hard all season and it was a wonderful achievement to finish in the top two.

A special congratulations to our two AGSV premiership winning teams, the Boys’ Volleyball and Boys’ Cricket teams.

The 1st XI Cricketers were presented with their trophy on Saturday, after breaking a 19 year drought and winning the AGSV Cricket premiership this year. The boys have worked tirelessly since August and were able to go through the season undefeated. The team was also awarded the Alan Graham trophy, in memory of a long-serving Sportsmaster of Ivanhoe Grammar School. This is a tradition spanning over 40 years, it has been presented to the winner of the 1st XI match between Camberwell and Ivanhoe since 1980. Coach Luke Lochran was, of course, absolutely thrilled, ‘The most pleasing aspect about winning this premiership is the fact that when the team was challenged, we always found a way to respond. The boys have made memories that will last them a lifetime and I am very proud of their efforts.’

With the Boys’ Cricket team bringing our boys AGSV premiership tally to 99, there was much anticipation about the Boys’ Volleyball game. It was very exciting when the boys won, achieving both a premiership win in its own right, and a key milestone for our School. This win is our 100th Boys’ AGSV premiership win, and we are the first AGSV School to achieve this. A wonderful milestone for us and the AGSV Competition. Congratulations to the Volleyball team for their sport spirit and such a significant win.

Everyone was very excited when the Boys’ 1sts Volleyball team was able to win their first ever AGSV premiership. The team, led by Year 12 Archie Taylor, is made up of all Year 11 students, outside of Archie. The majority have been developing their skills in the 1sts Volleyball program since Year 9. This win is the result of 3 years of development and hard work. The boys would like to thank all the parents, students and teachers who came out and gave brilliant support from the sidelines during the match.

In non AGSV sport, our Boys’ Touch Rugby team had a fantastic Grand Final game and finished as Grand Final winners. A great game was played by all. Congratulations to the team, who took on Scotch College for a nail biting Semi Final match and then Brighton Grammar for another intense match in the Grand Final, with not much time between the two for recovery. The Finals game was a draw with two minutes left to play, and as they have done all season, the boys worked together drawing on the supportive culture of the team, which has defined this group for the last three years. Congratulations to the team and coaching staff on a great win.

What a wonderful finish for Summer Sport, with these four wins adding to all our other wonderful Summer sporting achievements: our Girls’ Swimming Team finishing as AGSV Premierships a couple of weeks ago, our Girls’ First Softball team finishing top four, our Boys’ Swimming team finishing top four, our Boy’s Tennis team finishing as runners up on the weekend, and our Girls’ Touch football finishing top four.

We are so very proud of our students, dedicating time to practice and play their chosen sport, for their team spirit and representing Ivanhoe Grammar School at these competitions with such pride. Thank you also to the dedication of our staff who coach these teams, and to the parents who support our sporting program.
