Welcome Brendan Kelly

Brendan joins Ivanhoe Grammar School from Kristin School in Auckland where he has been the Senior School Principal for the last nine years. In this role he has had many highlights, from launching a new model of tertiary futures planning to developing a leadership program for over 100 students a year. In all of this time Brendan has kept at the forefront his belief that every single student matters, and that it is the great privilege of schools to develop the wonderful potential we see in each of our young men and woman.

An experienced international educator, Brendan has taught in New Zealand, Asia and Australia. He is a former Head of Geography and Social Science, and has been an examinations marker and writer of teaching resources in New Zealand. In his School Leadership career he has had roles as a Deputy and Associate Principal, Campus Principal, Senior School Principal and Acting Head of College. Committed to excellence, Brendan has been recognised for his work in lifting academic standards, reforming pastoral care and developing innovative new teaching programmes.

A keen sportsman, Brendan has played and coached Football (soccer), Rugby and Cricket for many years. Despite being a New Zealander and therefore dedicated to Rugby Union, he enjoys AFL and has been a supporter of the Carlton Blues for over 20 years. He is looking forward to returning to Melbourne and renewing his association with this great sport. An enthusiastic follower of Netball, Brendan is delighted to see this wonderful game also thriving at Ivanhoe.

A husband and dad as well as a teacher, Brendan draws great strength from his family and believes that healthy families are one of the keys to a stable society. An Anglican and occasional church historian, Brendan believes in values-based education in a climate of tolerance and compassion. He believes that schools like Ivanhoe can lead in this area and demonstrate to Australia, and the rest of the world, how to live and create opportunity in this exciting age.

He is excited to be coming to Ivanhoe and says that he “can’t wait to start”. “This is a superb school with an exciting international reputation, and my family and I look forward to joining the Ivanhoe community in 2016.”
