The Dr Oswald T Kyle Award

Alumna Claire Waterman from the Class of 2000 was awarded The Dr Oswald T Kyle Award for Outstanding Community Service by an Old Ivanhoe Grammarian. This prestigious award is in recognition of Claire’s outstanding commitment to community service and was presented to her at the recent Captain’s Assembly.

Claire attended Plenty Campus and is a member of the Class of 2000. Claire is the Director, Office of the CEO at Family Safety Victoria, which is the Victorian Government agency set up in July 2017 to lead responses to the Royal Commission into Family Violence recommendations. Prior to this, Claire held a number of management roles in Victoria Police in Family Violence Command, Crime Command and as the Senior Advisor for Violence Against Women and Children to Victoria Police’s executives.

Claire has also previously worked at the AFL as their National Education Manager for Respectful Relationships, Drug and Alcohol education across Australia. In 2018, Claire received a Public Service Medal in the Australia Day Honours for outstanding public service to family violence system reforms in Victoria. She holds a BA (Hons) in Criminology and Political Science.

Oswald Kyle attended Ivanhoe Grammar School from 1923 to 1929. After graduating in medicine he moved to Tasmania where he began forty years of service to the community, working tirelessly for improved health care facilities for the people of the Huon district. In 1965 he was awarded an O.B.E. for his service to medicine. He died in 1980 and in 1988 The Dr Oswald T Kyle Award for Outstanding Community Service by an Old Ivanhoe Grammarian was established by Leigh Holman with the generous support of Oswald Kyle’s family.

It was wonderful to have Claire’s family in attendance at the Assembly, her husband Ben from the Class of 1999 and young son Archie who will be joining our school in 2026. We are incredibly pleased that this distinguished award, recognising the ideals of an Ivanhoe Learner, has been awarded to Claire in 2019.
