National Indoor Cricket Championships

Year 10 Plenty Campus student Christian Ewings spent his holidays representing Victoria in the Indoor Cricket Championships in Queensland.

Though he has only played indoor cricket for 12 months, Christian represented Victoria in two categories: the Junior Indoor Cricket National Championships (in the 17&U Boys’ competition) and also the Open Indoor Cricket National Championship (in the 21&U Mens’ competition). For the first time, the competitions were played back-to-back in Mackay, North Queensland.

Christian gave us a full reflection on his two weeks in the competition:

From the July 1-15, having only played indoor cricket for one year, I was fortunate enough to represent Victoria firstly in the Junior Indoor Cricket National Championships in the 17 & Under Boys competition and the following week in the Open Indoor Cricket National Championships in the 21 & Under Men’s competition. The two competitions were held for the first time back to back in Mackay, North Queensland.

In the 17 & Under team, training began four months prior to the championships, at Northcote, Cranbourne and Dandenong. After losing the Grand Final to Western Australia in Dubbo in 2016, the 17 & Under team were hungry to take out the championship. All the training and hard work instantly paid off coming out of our first five games undefeated. Finishing top of the ladder after 8 round robin games, our finals journey began with the semi-final against Queensland, for a spot in the Grand Final. After unfortunately losing this game we faced South Australia in the Preliminary Final, comfortably beating them to secure our place in the Grand Final. Queensland proved too strong a side, taking out the Championship.

In the 21 & Under team, the story was fairly different. A less experienced team with three 16 year olds including myself, was fully established only two months prior to the championships! With many other coaches not expecting us to win a game at all, we proved them wrong with some great efforts and interesting evolutionary tactics, leading us to bamboozle the opposition and get ourselves two wins!

The championship was a lot of fun and I thoroughly enjoyed the high level of competition. It was a fantastic two weeks where sweatbands and Hydrolyte became our best friends!

Congratulations Christian on an amazing effort, especially being so new to the game! We hope to see more of you out on the pitch.
