International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day was celebrated with many special events this year. The theme for International Women’s Day 2018 is #PressforProgress. In the wake of the World Economic Forum’s 2017 Global Gender Gap Report, which found that gender parity is over 200 years away, we are all urged to keep campaigning for gender parity. The call for action has been particularly evident this year with the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements which have galvanised many and brought about significant change.

The celebrations for International Women’s Day 2018 at Ivanhoe Grammar School began with the launch of Art with Heart, an exhibition of artworks exploring gender equality where the Principal, Gerard Foley said, ‘Tonight we focus on Gender Equality, very timely being International Women’s Day which is as important for men as it is for women, as it is men who are going to have to change attitudes not just in Australia but even more so in many countries around the world.’ The exhibition showcased the works of students of all ages and genders.

Ms Agrawal and Ms Meighan from the Global Citizenship Centre have been working across the School to promote and integrate into the curriculum the theme of gender equality throughout the term, but specifically this week, being the week of our Art with Heart Exhibition and International Women’s Day.

The senior library was awash in the colours purple, green and white, students were guests at the Banyule Women in Business Lunch, and we had a very special visit from #AFLWplayer Nicky Callinan who spoke to our primary students about leadership and encouraged them to believe in themselves and strive for their dreams.

It has been wonderful to see students and the Ivanhoe community explore the theme of gender equality through so many different mediums, such as art, assignments, workshops and special guest speakers enabling them to learn and expand their knowledge on the subject. We will continue to celebrate the many great teachers and young women of character at Ivanhoe Grammar School.
