Senior Driving Program

28 Jul 2010

Ivanhoe Grammar School students have been given the chance to try out new technology that aims to reduce the road toll amongst young people. For the first two weeks of Term 3 students in Years 10 and 11 have been able to visit The Ridgeway Campus Arts precinct where a state-of-the-art driving simulator has been set up in the parking lot.

The simulator, run by TAG Systems, also has an expert driving instructor guiding the students on safe defensive driving techniques. The program at the School has been generously sponsored by Miles Real Estate in Ivanhoe so that students have this fantastic opportunity which they have taken to with great enthusiasm.

The simulator is similar to what you would find at QANTAS with their simulator to train pilots or at Ferrari F1 where their drivers train before a race. It has a full size functional car set up on a stand with screens all around the driver to give the impression of a real world driving environment.

After completing the simulator course the students are given a report and feedback on how they did. This way the students are able to get an individualised idea of where they can improve their driving and it will also provide perspective on their skill levels.

Considering that the single greatest cause of death and injury for a person under 25 years old in Australia is road trauma related and that 90% of road trauma is attributed to human error, it is of great benefit to give young people the chance to experience various road conditions in a safe environment before they are confronted with these situations on the road and that they have the tools to act accordingly.
