Science Week
26 Aug 2010
From 16 - 20 August Ivanhoe students were exposed to a diverse range of scientific activities in the light of National Science Week. On Monday, 50 students were treated with an engaging and fun presentation from Luke Webb, an Aeronautical Engineer from RMIT University. Students were given a water rocket demonstration, an insight into the life of an Aeronautical Engineer as well as the chance to make their own aerodynamic paper plane!
On Wednesday, Anj Chakravorty, from Monash University's Microbiology School, gave students an interactive overview of many of the bacterial strains that are prevalent in today's society, right down to the all too common Influenza Virus.
On Friday, Ivanhoe Grammar's first, and we are very sure, not the last water rocket competition was held. Students had a month to design, construct and trial their rockets before launching them on the South Ground. Isaac and Mervick from Year 11 were the clear winners with their Physics background sending their rocket literally out of the park! A big congratulations to all involved.Lastly a very successful barbecue was held at lunch on Friday to raise funds for an Orang-utan in Borneo.
At Ivanhoe's Plenty Campus students participated in scientific debates on the impact that humans have on nature, heard from Dr Peter Sale about the challenges of feeding the world in the future and Year 8 students competed to build mousetrap racers.
All in all, a brilliant week filled with tons of fun.
