Our World - Our Choice
22 Jul 2010
Over two days starting Monday 19 July, Year 10 students from The Ridgeway and Plenty Campus took part in a conference titled 'Our World - Our Choice' at Queen's College at the University of Melbourne. The goal was to bring a greater understanding of global issues and to encourage students to become more aware of the world around them.
The conference was held to build on the knowledge that students have acquired through the 'Global Perspectives' subject taken by all Year 10 students. Organised by Ivanhoe's Director of World Studies, Mr Tim Bush, and run by ‘The High Resolves Initiative', a non-profit educational program that seeks to motivate students to become purposeful global citizens, the conference had two main themes:
The theme on the first day was ‘Collective Identity' which sought to develop a mindset that enables students to see the unity of humanity despite its tremendous diversity, and recognise the need to build unity with people from other backgrounds.
The theme of the second day was ‘Justice' which enabled students to see justice as an indispensible tool in creating a better world and knowing that is possible to create a more just society.
Students participated in many group activities over the two days and heard from a range of expert speakers and came away with a deeper understanding and appreciation of global issues and challenges. Students keenly undertook all tasks which ensured the conference was a great success and a very rewarding experience.
