Greenway Cup Debate

12 Aug 2010

Almost every year since 1932, Ivanhoe Grammar School and Ivanhoe Girls' Grammar School have competed against each other in the Greenway Cup debate. This year's topic was 'That Australians are too laid back', with Ivanhoe Grammar School Year 12 students Jessica, Xavier and Alice arguing for the negative. The adjudicators were from the Debaters Association of Victoria.

The debate was very engaging and entertaining with both sides putting forward a strong case, making for a very close contest. In the end though the adjudicators determined Ivanhoe Grammar School to be the winners, thereby taking the Cup back to Ivanhoe after the Ivanhoe Girls won the competition last year.

The Greenway Cup Debating Competition was established by Mr Herbert T Greenway, whose daughter Eunice attended Ivanhoe Girls' Grammar School. Over the years many interesting topics have been debated between the Schools, with the very first topic being 'That sport plays too prominent a part in Australian life'.

After Ivanhoe Grammar School's win this year and 78 years of competition the total wins for each school incredibly now stands at 39 wins for Ivanhoe and 38 wins for Ivanhoe Girls'!
