Leadership
“We provide opportunities to develop student leadership experiences and skills at all year levels.” Ivanhoe Grammar School Strategic and Action Plan 2011-2015
Authentic student or peer leadership is dependent on personal responsibilities, kindness and justice. Leadership is more than management; it is to do with initiative, commitment, creativity and inspiration. Students are taught that true leadership is found in those whose convictions are rooted in personal responsibility, kindness and justice. Opportunities for student leadership in the School's community are fostered. The Round Square Award enables students to choose to discover, understand and practise their leadership strengths. It incorporates accountability, responsibility and service.
Examples of leadership activities that can be undertaken:
- Cadets – Students who are members of the School’s Cadets Corps participate in an organised program of leadership and learning on a weekly basis. They participate in several camping expeditions each year and undergo formal leadership training if they are promoted through the ranks over their years at School.
- Sports Coaching – Students may decide to coach or assist in the coaching of a Junior or Middle Years Sports team for either the summer or winter season.
- Scouts/Guides (out of School) - Students who are active and regular members of the Scouting/Guiding Movement in a local troop commit to a program of leadership and outdoor education as well as developing themselves in areas of individual recreational interest.
- Outdoor Education Leaders - After being selected by their Head of House as a suitable candidate, Outdoor Education Leaders are formally trained for their role over a weekend and then allocated for a Junior School or Middle Years camp as a leader and mentor for the duration of that camp.
- Significant Leadership role in a recognised out of School organisation – If a student is making a regular and significant commitment to a charity, committee or community organisation, they can apply to have this recognised by the School.
- Peer Tutoring – Academically able students are trained by the Director of Special Education and/or the Gifted and Talented Coordinator to run sessions in specific subject areas for lunch times or out of school sessions.
- Prefects – Prefects are required to work with the team of prefects to lead the student body by example and with duties that enrich School life. They will also take responsibilities for a specific portfolio in an area that interests them.
- House Leaders – House Leaders have a very hands on role in leading and organising the students in their House in House Sports, House Co-Curricular Activities and Student Personal Development sessions.
- Peer Mentoring - Peer Mentors at Year 11 are selected by Heads of House to be trained over a weekend to be a Year 7 mentor or an ELICOS mentor. Formal mentoring times are organised by the School but it is expected it will be ongoing and develop on an informal basis as well as in designated times.
- Debating Leaders – Senior debaters coach junior debating teams and accompany them to evening debates at Ivanhoe Grammar School and other schools.
- Significant Leadership Role in a School Club or Committee – If a student is an office bearer and active volunteer in a School Club or Committee under the Round Square banner and is devoting a significant amount of time and effort to this, they may apply to have this recognised by the School.
