Internationalism

“We wish to be compassionate and considerate in our interactions with each other, including those from different cultural backgrounds, valuing diversity and understanding the importance of developing an international mindset.” Ivanhoe Grammar School Strategic and Action Plan 2011-2015

The aim of Round Square is to ‘empower young people to become committed and responsible global citizens.’  It is important to see activities, particularly school based activities, in a broader context, bearing in mind the maxim ‘Think Globally Act Locally’. Working with people from different social or cultural backgrounds and taking action to tackle global issues within the vicinity of the school can do as much to increase international engagement and awareness as an overseas experience.

Examples of international trips / journeys that can be used to meet the international pillar:

  • Language / Cultural Trips – Ivanhoe Grammar School provides language / cultural trips to Japan and France.
  • International Round Square Service Projects – invite students from Round Square Schools to participate in development and environmental projects in the developing world.
  • International / Regional Round Square Conferences – annual Regional and International Round Square Conferences provide opportunities for students to meet and collaborate with students from around the world on issues that confront the international community.
  • Exchange Programs – varying in length from a month to a year, exchange programs are available to all students at Ivanhoe Grammar School to over 100 schools around the world.

Examples of activities that have an international dimension:

  • International Students Council – comprises students committed to building bridges of friendship between international local students through a range of activities, including sport, presentations at student assemblies and excursions.
  • Multicultural Committee – students in the Multicultural Committee are committed to acknowledging and celebrating the many cultures within and outside Ivanhoe Grammar School through a range of activities.
